Abstract
This article is based on two pieces of work. The first, Homes Unfit for Children (Oldman & Beresford, 1998), was based on a postal survey and 40 in‐depth interviews with families with disabled children. The second, due to be published by the Policy Press in the spring this year, reports the results of a programme of consultation roadshows with a range of professionals from housing, social services and health, in a series of regional consultation meetings.

Abstract
POLICY GUIDANCE ON HOUSING and community care since 1990 has offered little analysis of the particular issues involved in developing housing and support to people living in rural settings. The Housing Associations' Charitable Trust (HACT) Rural Supported Housing Programme, working closely with the Rural Development Commission and the Housing Corporation, will over the next three years fund up to 30 rural supported housing projects. The University of York has started to carry out an evaluation of these.

Abstract
Discusses how marketing principles and techniques can be of considerable value both in the design and operation of library and information services. Stresses, however, that information services have different characteristics which, at the same time, warn against injudicious use of marketing techniques. Examines the benefits that would accrue to libraries adopting a more user‐oriented policy – advocating further exploration into the context of information need. Contends that, in contrast to much standard marketing theory, in this field user expectations have considerable influence on the end product.

Abstract
In terms of size, arrangement and catalogues, the conventional library has reached an organisational and financial impasse. Coincidentally there has emerged a pre‐emptive new technology for the storage, handling and transmission of information, potentially better suited to the convenience of users. Libraries may disappear like the dinosaurs; or they may, by returning to first principles, be able to adapt and successfully survive.

Abstract
In this article, I have traced the literature of marketing libraries and information services from 1970 to the present. This period immediately follows Kotler and Levy's introductory article in the Journal of Marketing (January 1969) which first suggested the idea of marketing nonprofit organizations. The use of the marketing concept for libraries and information services was an idea which did not appear until after that date. However, many articles on specific aspects of marketing, such as publicity and public relations, were published prior to 1970. These areas have been touched upon only briefly to show their connection with marketing.
